mooncarrot created a new topic ' This years (2013) Chillies' in the forum.Happy 2013 to all...it's been a while.. Hope everyone had a good crop last year. Had a bumper yield of Butch T's and Vipers last year which made quite a few pounds of extremely potent jam but great for cooking, dipping and as a party piece where it's reserved for those who talk just a little too much about their Phal eating conquests....Phals one thing but a Trinidad Scorpion Butch T Jam is another...haha..... Anyway this years crop is underway consisting of amongst others Trinidad Scorpion Mouragas, Trinidad Scorpion Butch T's..of course..Spanish Naga and White Habs... Looking forwards to seeing what everyone is growing this year and how their plants are progressing... Heres a pic of the germination stage set up....24 degrees ambient heat 28 degrees propagation heat and 2 x 6400k 200 watt CFL lamps for lighting....that's it... Cheers

mooncarrot replied to the topic Re: Blight. in the forum.Hi Paul
I'm not a botanist but here goes....
The way I see it is that the word 'Blight' is a description of the symptoms and not an absolute complete name for a specific disease...
Chillies,Tomatoes and potatoes are members of the same family and can all suffer from 'Blight' caused by a water mold called Phytophtlora....
Phytophtlora has many species that are resposible for the breakdown of many plant types and each species is generally host specific (Tomato and potato being one exception)...
I believe the species affecting Chilli is not the same one that affects Tomatos/potatos so you should be ok....
I've always been happy with this explanation and haven't had any problems growing Chillies/peppers and Tomatoes in the same glasshouse but then I've never had to deal with any Blight...
Hope this helps....

mooncarrot replied to the topic Re: A few pics of this years Chillies in the forum.Hi Big J and Stuie...Thanks for the encouraging words and it sounds like some
good results all round..
I'm definately pleased with the rate of growth on the plants especially the Habs
and the Scorpions but would have even more of a sense of achievement if I'd have
propagated and brought them on using your methods...I was just fortunate enough
to have spare lighting etc this year and only had to bump up the glasshouse temp
by a few degrees...no-one could fail but get good results this way I'm sure..
Would love to see some pics of your plants and know what varieties they are..
Been feeding them with a nitrogen(N) biased fertiliser to encourage leaf growth
and will be switching to a Potassium(K) biased one to promote flowering and fruit
with Phospherous(P) remaining average for the roots...Nothing scientific in the
method...just simple trial and error..the way I like it
Came across some evidence of snails/slugs in the glasshouse yesterday...deployed
a ring of chemical defences inside...I didn't hang about and used blueys inside
as there's no risk of secondary kill being a contained environment..
Not sure what other pests and diseases Chillies are vulnerable too but I'll find
out soon enough I guess and also I'm curious as too how big each variety grows..
Look forwards to seeing some pics..
Cheers

mooncarrot replied to the topic Re: A few pics of this years Chillies in the forum.Hi Cobra Hi Sean...
The darker variety are Explosive Ember....Classed as an ornamental bush type
plant, having said that they are said to have a heat factor of 7/10.I'm growing
them primarily for an ornamental display but not having grown them before I'm
looking forwards to trying out the fruits.....bonus...
Black Pearls look stunning...( I had to google image it )...I do like the
idea of dual purpose plants...ornamental/edible.
I usually propagate a reasonable volume of annual bedding plants etc early season
under glass so when I decided to explore into the world of Chillies this year I
was fortunate enough to be able to spare some heating/lighting equipment and of
course underglass space to be able to go for it...
Learning and enjoying the Chilli experience so far and got to say I find it
interesting and educational reading on the SDCF forums how others get the best
out of their plants...Lots of cost effective proven good ideas and guidance
through others experiences of trial and error....
Happy Days...

mooncarrot created a new topic A few pics of this years Chillies in the forum.Hi..
Here are a few pics of my chillies sown on January 14th this year...
There are Explosive Ember,Ring of Fire,Jamaican Hot Chocolate,Orange Habanero,Red
Habanero,Krakatoa,Naga Viper and Trinidad Scorpian Butch T's...
The insulated heated glasshouse has been a constant 23 degrees with the seeds
germinated at 26 degrees in propagators...
Lighting has been 2 x 300 watt CFLs with several subsidary fluorescent units...
Humidity has been kept high but not measured....
The germination rate has been very pleasing....19 out of 22 Habaneros came up...
The Vipers and Jamaicans did well and 60% of the Scorpians germinated successfully
Its been an interesting and experimental season so far this year and the electric
consumption has been high but despite the cost I feel rewarded by the results to
date....
Cheers
