Cobra replied to the topic Re: A night in the fridge? in the forum.
I would suggest that this is false. Seeds are dormant, in a state of suspended animation. The biochemical mechanisms which would facilitate such a response to cold are also suspended. They are oblivious to external factors which do not kill them completely.
I believe that the best method for germination is to soak seeds in weak tea (cold) for three to six hours prior to sowing. This appears to significantly improve germination rates in terms of yield and rapidity. This, however, does have a scientific basis: the tea softens the seed case, making it easier for water to permeate into the embryo and the seed to reanimate and germinate. Read More... |

Cobra replied to the topic Re: iPhone/iPod app suggestions in the forum.
An Android app would be cool. It's free, open-source software which should be supported.
I speak as an iOS (admittedly, hacked beyond all recognition) user: the only closed-source OS I use and which I would dump in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the nice hardware which comes with the package. Windows, for example, is a long and gladly-forgotten nightmare for me... Free, open-source software rocks! Read More... |

The outdoors growing season is miserably short up here. When I was coming home the other night my car was frozen over properly, and it was -5 deg C outside... An allotment would be wishful thinking!
Indoors in a conservatory is a much better proposition, however, the place I'm looking at doesn't have this. But hey ho, where there's a will, there's a way. Read More... |

Cobra created a new topic Going to be losing most of my chillies soon... in the forum.
Quite frustrated. I presently live in a house with a conservatory which faces south and gets loads of sun. I can even grow chillies in the middle of a Caithness winter, which is quite something.
Unfortunately, I am going to have to leave this house and move home... The new houses I'm looking at don't have anywhere to grow chillies... Not sure what I can do about that, but I'm quite annoyed! Read More... |

You're best off moving up in size fairly gradually.

Cobra replied to the topic Re: Help required - What is this plant? in the forum.
That isn't a chilli plant, that's for sure! I don't know what else it could be, maybe just try letting it grow?
As for the red spots, it could be rust which is a fungal infection. Dithane (available everywhere) can be used to treat this. Read More... |
