TOPIC: suffering flower drop, please help?

suffering flower drop, please help? 1 year, 7 months ago #432

my chili is a cheyenne, it is around 50cm and i have 5 fruit on. However, ever since the fruit have started to grow i have suffered a drastic amount of flowers dropping off (like around 30).

I had it on the windowsill and watered it about 2-3 times a week and fed every other week when the fruit started to develop, then because i lost some flowers i thought it may be due to over watering, so i have reduced the watering to weekly and still fed it every other week, the fertiliser is a tomato feed (NPK is 4-4-8) and still flowers fell.

So i moved it into a green house incase the glass magnified the sun in the windowsill and the temperature was too much and still flowers fell, i pollinated them to see if it was that and still they fell, i then brought it inside at night because the greenhouse doesnt retain much heat (i live in the UK by the way) and still they fell.

Temperatures in the greenhouse on a sunny day are 30-40 degrees, i'm unsure about the night temperature. I have searched and searched on the internet and tried various things but nothing has worked does anyone have any idea what is the cause please

Hi there,

I can see why you're confused - sounds like you're doing everything right to me so I don't know what to suggest. You could try a couple of things:

Give a little water each morning so that the plants are humid on a hot day (stop flowers drying-out) and spray the flowers with a mister in the evening.

Other than that, you could pretend to don't care and treat them rough - that works sometimes

I've been having similar problems with flower drop, but it seems to come in phases. My Jalapenos had a terrible problem a few weeks ago, then they seemed fine, now they're suffering again. I've just moved house to somewhere that I have a good conservatory for them to live in rather than on the windowsill so I'm hoping all will improve with some heat and sun.

My cherry bombs are a bit of a mystery too - I have 2 plants, each about 1 1/2 feet tall, and each with only 4 chillis. They are fully grown, still green, but there is no sign of any more fruit. One plant has completely stopped flowering, the other just drops the few flowers it forms. What's happening here?????

i find that a big change in temp dont help and give them a mist when realy hot also dont use very cold water when watering try to get it to the same temp as where the plants are growing so as not to shock the plant too mutch hope this helps
