I have for some time now been wondering how all the numerous new types of chili are appearing all over the place. How are these plants produced/created? Is it a simple method of cross-pollination or by grafting a stem from one variety onto another? I would really like to try to create a new variety. Any ideas?

Producing hybids is possible with a few tools. We sell a book (The Complete Chilli Pepper Book) which has a section on how to do this. Not something we have tried as yet - let us know how you get on.

Kind regards, Steve

Does the cross pollenation have to be between chillis, or can it be between, for instance:

a chilli and a tomato, or maybe an orange?

or is that impossible?

I was reading an article that hybrids are made by cross-pollinating the two varieties to produce one hybrid. The small plants are then again cross-pollinated numerous times until the desired effect/characteristics and flavour are achieved. As with tomatoes, Im not sure but technically it would be possible as long as they have a similar DNA structure. Could someone possibly enlighten us a little more on this subject?

I believe tomatoes and chilli's are both fruits, unless it doesn't work that way...Someone enlighten us please .

they are fruits, although i'm pretty certain you can't cross a chilli with a tomato.the DNA structure would need to be the same, not merely similar, surely?
