How do you resist the urge to water the plants too often "just in case"

I was told to keep the soil damp but with the weather at the moment the top soil is bone dry and I cant test further down.

Is there a trick to this or should I just water every couple of days?

Mine are swinning at the moment, and its not seem to harm my chillis, this may be the wrong advice, but just water away.

its not hurting mu chilli's anyway

you should only water or mist the compost to keep the compost moist, not soaked, as prolonged soaking will start to curl & eventually rot the leaves.the plant will suffer if you continue to do this.
it's best to keep the soil moist.you can let it dry out for a day or so & water again when the leaves begin to wilt slightly-this is thought to make the eventual fruit hotter.
never, ever let your chillies "swim" in water

Hi,

Swimming is usually fatal to chilli plant roots - you can make it work if the water is well supplied with oxygen - hydroponics-style, or by just adding loads of grit/perlite to the compost.

If planted in a standard compost or in the ground, just give them a good drink when you know they are dry or if they are dry and witting at the beginning or end of the day.

If planted in the ground, you can help to keep them happy by making a raised bed or planting in a mound of soil that keeps their roots above the general soil level - very hard to over water them then.

Regards, Steve
