I've grown three types this year, hot wax, freshno and ring of fire, however, on the whole they look nothing like the box. Some are more like small bananas? Is this normal?

Me too.
I've grown Ring of Fire for several years, seeds mainly provided by SDCF.
I would describe RoF as Cayenne type chilli, about 8-10mm thick and 50-70mm long, tapering to a sharp point.
This year, same seed supplier as usual, all 3 plants are forming "thumb" fat, bullet shaped chillies, with a distinct rounded end. I'm growing 8 other varieties, none of which resemble the rogue RoF, so it's not a question of me mislabelling them.
Wonder what's going on?

What you're describing sounds like a Serrano to me - have you got a picture of the fruits? Serrano plants tend to have hairy leaves/stems too.

I can't see the "hairy" aspect of them. They do however have the "crazed skin" of a jalapeno type.
